A Coppola school bus was involved in a crash involving two passenger vehicles Wednesday morning and WHAV News has confirmed no students were on board at the time.

An eyewitness who lives on Water Street told WHAV he heard a “boom” shortly before 9 a.m. and came out of his home to the crash scene. The same resident expressed concern that it was “only a matter of time” before an accident took place, given the recent change in traffic patterns leading over the Basiliere Bridge and into the downtown business district.

The bus involved was bus No. 7, which transports students from Haverhill High, Hunking, Bradford Elementary and Greenleaf. Other vehicles involved included a white Ford and a black compact car with a New Hampshire license plate. Both vehicles were towed away by 110 Towing, while the bus driver drove her bus away from the scene at 9:25 a.m.

One male and one female patient were taken by ambulance from the scene by paramedics from Trinity EMS, though it is unclear of their involvement in the accident. Following the crash, Haverhill Police investigating Officer Gillian Brignac surveyed the scene and spoke to witnesses while Sergeant John Spero helped get traffic moving again.

The heavily congested area that includes Central Plaza has been under construction over the last several months as part of a $2.8 million state-funded project to coordinate and modernize traffic signals along Haverhill’s Main Street.
