Richard C. ‘Dickie’ Hanscom, 81, Former Lucent Employee

Richard C. “Dickie” Hanscom, 81, passed away on August 13 at Portsmouth (N.H.) Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Clarence and Emma (Garavanta) Hanscom. Raised and educated in Haverhill, he attended St. James Grammar School and was a graduate of St. James High School’s class of 1955. He was employed for over 35 years as a layout operator for Lucent Technologies.

Hanscom was known as a smart, comical, kind and generous gentleman who was loved by all. He enjoyed summering at Hampton Beach, N.H., with his family and friends and loved to gamble, frequenting Rockingham and Seabrook racetracks, traveling to Las Vegas and Foxwoods. He will be remembered for his humor and his kind, loving spirit.

He leaves behind his loving sister, Nancy L. Peabody of Atkinson, N.H., his adoring nieces, Debra A. House and her husband Jeffrey of Haverhill and Linda M. DeLegge and her husband Kevin of Atkinson, N.H., along with great-nieces Taylor and Allison House and Cassandra and Olivia DeLegge. He was predeceased by his brother Robert H. Hanscom.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, Aug. 17 from 5-7 p.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services will begin on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. James Church on Winter Street in Haverhill. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill. Donations may be made in his memory to Atkinson Elder Services, Transportation Department, 21 Academy Ave., Atkinson, NH 03811.
