Capt. Robert P. Pistone and Lt. Garrett Sarfde were formally sworn in to those superior Haverhill Police Department ranks during a ceremony Friday morning in City Hall.

Haverhill Mayor James J. Fiorentini swore in the longtime officers.

Pistone joined the department in July 2000 as a patrolman. He was a Groveland reserve police officer for two years before that. He was one of 232 law enforcement officers who graduated in June from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, Va. The training included modern crime-solving techniques, advanced communications and leadership training, among other topics.

Sarfde is a 15-year veteran of the force, becoming a patrolman in 2003. Earlier, he served as a reserve police officer for two years.

Both men began their new duties July 1, when the current year’s city budget went into effect.
