WHAV is saluting local and state K-9 officers and their four-legged partners in a special series. Listen to the special Dog Days of Summer series Monday through Friday, at 97.9 WHAV FM. The special series is sponsored by the Law Offices of Joseph C. Edwards, Neptune Uniforms, Quinn’s Canine Café and Riverside Veterinary Clinic.

Promoted to the rank of sergeant in June, Andover’s Michael “Mickey” Connor isn’t about to part ways with his longtime K-9 partner, Grimm, any time soon. In fact, the local K-9 handler tells WHAV he’s getting ready to revamp their Facebook photo series, “Where’s Grimm Wednesday?!” this fall.

The social media series that features photographs of Grimm at Andover landmarks and asks residents to guess his location was the brainchild of Lt. Greg Scott, whom Connor credits for making the effort a success.

“Kids are amazed at it and it’s a big thing for the police department. Greg Scott picked up on that and asked me to do it and it’s been a great success,” Connor said.

Connor tells WHAV his K-9 partner, trained in tracking and narcotics detection, has become somewhat of a local celebrity in Andover.

“He’s a good, photogenic dog, which is amazing,” Connor told WHAV. “It’s a lot of fun. He just goes out, does what he needs to do and takes pictures. People see us out and about and they all want to know if it’s Grimm.”

As his department’s sole K-9 handler, Connor will keep working with Grimm until his retirement. Connor told WHAV he’s especially grateful to Andover Police Chief Patrick Keefe for allowing his K-9 pal to remain at his side in his new role as sergeant.

“Chief Keefe did me a favor and let me keep him until he retires,” said Connor. “He still has life in him, so I want to work him before retires and gets to sit on the couch.”
