Rev. George F. Moore, 89, Portland St. Church Pastor, Opened Fleet St. Youth Center

Rev. George F. Moore, 89, of Newton, N.H., former pastor at Portland Street Baptist Church in Haverhill, passed away peacefully July 30 at Avita of Newburyport.

While in Haverhill, Moore opened a youth center on Fleet Street and operated The Book Mark book store on Merrimack Street.

He was born in Barss Corner, Nova Scotia, Canada Jan. 25, 1929. He was the eldest of 15 children of the late Dennis and Dorothy (Barkhouse) Moore. He was educated in Nova Scotia and came to the United States in the late 1940s and graduated from Gordon College and Gordon Theological Seminary.

Upon graduating he was ordained into the American Baptist Association and was a pastor in Medway and Westminster and came to Haverhill in 1965 where he was pastor at the Portland Street Baptist Church. He was also pastor at Newton First Baptist and Crown Point Second Baptist Church in New Hampshire.

Moore and his wife also enjoyed portraying George and Martha Washington and both traveled the country doing historical re-enactments.

Moore was the husband of the late Beulah E. (DeLong) Moore. He is survived by his sons David, Robert (Donna) of Newton, N.H., with whom he made his home; grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Nadeau, Sara (Heith) Vierow, Matthew (Kate) Moore, Davia Moore and Nicholas Moore; great grandchildren, Emily and Christopher Nadeau, Natalie, Laila, Caroline and Jack Vierow, Nicholas, Jeremiah and Rylee Moore; sisters Frances, Ellen (Calvin), Ethel (Merrill), Marie (Jacques), Ardith (Henk), Florence, Irene (Carter); siblings Arthur , Douglas and Llewellyn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Hazel, Annie, Margaret and Helen.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours Saturday morning, Aug.4, from 11-12:45 at H.L. Farmer and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial in Highland Cemetery, Newton, N.H., will be private and at the convenience of the family.
