A Massachusetts State Trooper is in stable condition as he recovers from injuries sustained after being hit by a Haverhill driver during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon in Billerica.

The accident happened when the male trooper was outside his cruiser in the breakdown lane of Billerica’s Route 3 Thursday speaking to a motorist he pulled over. During the stop, the trooper was struck by a 2012 Toyota Prius operated by a 53-year-old Haverhill man, whose car drifted from the right lane into the breakdown lane, according to police.

The accident pinned the 56-year-old trooper between the two vehicles, resulting in serious injuries to his upper and lower body. He was transported to Lahey Clinic and his identity is being kept private while he recovers.

The Haverhill driver stopped at the scene, State Police said.
