Elinore J. Coucouvitis, 95, Former Teacher

Elinore J. Coucouvitis, 95, of East Hampstead, N.H., passed away on Monday, July 23 at Birch Hill Terrace in Manchester, N.H.

She was born in Haverhill on Jan. 1, 1923, the daughter of the late James K. and Irene (Belchos) Coucouvitis. She was a graduate of Haverhill High School in the class of 1940. Coucouvitis received her bachelor’s degree in 1944 from Wheaton College and her master’s degree in English from the University of New Hampshire in 1965.

Coucouvitis was on the board of directors of the family business, B & C Shoe Company, which relocated from Haverhill to Manchester, N.H.

She began her teaching career in New Boston, N.H. She went on to teach in the Manchester, N.H., school system for five years and then taught English at Medford High School, retiring after 25 years in 1990. Coucouvitis was a very passionate and well-loved educator with a lifelong interest in English literature, classical literature, art and politics.

She is predeceased by her brothers James Coucouvitis and Constantine James Covis, sisters Dorothy Jenis and Artemis Apostle and her niece Melanie Covis. Coucouvitis is survived by her four nephews Philip Jenis of Manchester, N.H., William Jenis of Concord, N.H., James Covis of West Chester, Penn., and Dean Covis of Goffstown, N.H., in addition to several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Monday, July 30 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Apostles Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill. An hour of visitation will precede the service on Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill. Burial will be in Haverhill’s Linwood Cemetery.
