Republican congressional candidate Rick Green is rooting for National Grid employees locked out of their jobs without health insurance coverage. As contract negotiations continue, Green announced the launch of an online GoFundMe campaign to help gas workers pay their healthcare costs.

Green, running to succeed retiring Niki Tsongas to represent the 3rd district, pledged to personally match the first $5,000 raised.

“National Grid gas workers have been locked out and must cover the cost of their own health insurance. For workers or members of their families with life threatening or chronic conditions like cancer or diabetes, losing their health insurance could be catastrophic,” the candidate said. “Your donation will be used to help workers…cover their health insurance.”

The campaign, available online by searching for the “Gas Workers Support Fund” through GoFundMe.com, raised $300 of its $25,000 goal as of Thursday afternoon.

In Haverhill, one of the communities of the district Green is vying to represent, city officials imposed a moratorium on non-emergency projects until the lockout ends.
