Four of Haverhill’s superior officers, including Chief Alan R. DeNaro, traveled to Hanover on Thursday to pay their respects on behalf of the department at the wake of slain Weymouth Police Sergeant Michael Chesna, who was killed in the line of duty last week.

Joining DeNaro in their dress blues were Deputy Chief Anthony Haugh, Captain Kim Parolisi and Captain Stephen Doherty.

The Haverhill foursome was among thousands of officers from across the state that created a sea of blue outside the funeral home. A private walk-through was held in advance of the public wake.

A funeral for the Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, who was killed with just one hour left on his weekend shift July 15, took place Friday.

Chesna was shot and killed with his own gun while responding to a car crash. According to police, 20-year-old Emmanuel Lopes threw a rock at Chesna, stole his weapon and killed him and 77-year-old innocent bystander Vera Adams.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Chesna’s memory may be made to the Officer Michael Chesna Family Fund. Checks may be mailed or dropped off at the Weymouth Police Station, 140 Winter St., Weymouth 02188.
