A North Avenue resident faces drunken driving charges after an accident on Haverhill’s Main Street toppled a telephone pole and snarled traffic late Monday night.

Haverhill Police Officer Ruben Jimenez took 56-year-old Peter Lekani into custody at 358 Main St., at 10 p.m., charging him with operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Main Street was closed for approximately two hours as the accident scene was cleared, Haverhill Police spokesman Captain Stephen J. Doherty Jr. told WHAV.
