Eleven Methuen residents went behind the badge as part of the city’s Senior Citizen Police Academy, graduating from the four-week course last week.
Mayor James P. Jajuga and Chief Joseph E. Solomon applauded the locals as they concluded their study of the police department on June 26 with ride alongs and a graduation ceremony.
“It was great to welcome some of our seniors and give them and our officers a chance to get to know each other on a more personal level,” Solomon said. “This academy is a unique opportunity for residents to get a firsthand look at the different types of work our officers do, that they otherwise may never have a chance to see.”
Gathering for Tuesday morning sessions each week, the senior cadets learned about the department’s bureaus and units, including K-9, animal control, drugs and intelligence, Solomon said. They were also advised on best practices to avoid IRS scams and other types of fraud that commonly target seniors.
“Seniors are regularly targeted by scammers and criminals, so I’m grateful for the efforts of the police department to provide them with the information they need to protect themselves,” Jajuga said. “I’m glad that so many residents took part in this program and I want to thank all of the officers who took time to share their work.”
Methuen Police Capt. Kevin Mahoney, Officer Thomas Torrisi and Sgt. Joseph Rynne were among those who helped Solomon facilitate the academy.
