Editor’s Note: The annual Cycle for Shelter bike ride benefitting Emmaus takes place on Sunday, July 22 at Northern Essex Community College. Ahead of the event, WHAV is profiling several riders and sharing why they ride. Here, WHAV gets to know Atkinson, N.H., rider Darien Terrile.
Former Haverhill obstetrician Darien Terrile is a veteran Cycle for Shelter rider who, at 86, will be 2018’s oldest participant. Marking his 10th anniversary ride this year, Terrile tells WHAV he’s up to the challenge of riding 40 miles throughout the Merrimack Valley. After all, he’s taken the ride’s 100-mile trek several times in the past.
“It’s my hobby: I like that for exercise. Instead of running, I like to ride a bike. I still ride quite a bit—not as fast or as far as I used to—but I like to get out and keep in good shape,” Terrile tells WHAV.
Terrile, who takes 20-mile practice rides when weather allows, looks forward to traveling the scenic back roads of Haverhill, Boxford, Georgetown and Newbury—as long as the route is clearly marked.
“I’ll probably end up doing 50 miles if I get lost along the way,” he joked.
