Covanta’s Haverhill-based Business Manager Mark Van Weelden has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Environmental Business Council of New England following a two-year stint on the group’s solid waste management committee.

“The EBC is an organization that continues to tackle tough environmental issues through its programming and environmental projects support across the New England region. This programming is critical in fostering a high level of communication with local, state and federal regulatory agencies,” said Van Weelden. “I am proud to continue serving our members as part of the leadership team.”

The nonprofit Environmental Business Council hosts more than 100 programs regionally to provide information about and support for environmental issues.

New Jersey-based Covanta operates energy-from-waste facilities across the region, including one in Haverhill’s Ward Hill. One of the largest recyclers in Massachusetts, Covanta is credited with managing nearly two million tons of municipal solid waste annually.
