Commuters need not struggle to make extra time to purchase tickets before hopping on the train for much longer. Starting this fall, all commuter rail trains, including Haverhill, will accept credit cards on-board, the MBTA’s operating partner Keolis said this week.
The mobile point of sale system—which also accepts debit cards—is still in the testing phase and is expected to roll out to the entire transit system over the next two months.
“This upgrade gives our customers an additional, convenient way to pay fares, and gives conductors another way to sell onboard tickets that is easier and simpler than using cash and counting change,” MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramirez said.
Receipts will be provided to those paying with plastic, Keolis said. Tickets are still available for purchase using cash or the mTicket app.
The payment news comes on the heels of the MBTA’s announcement that special $10 summer weekend fares are available for unlimited travel in all zones on Saturdays and Sundays through September 2.
