Freshman congressional candidate Lori Trahan is putting a focus on education as she preps for September’s primary election.
During a visit to the Greater Lowell Technical School this week, Trahan—running to succeed Niki Tsongas in the 3rd District—unveiled her four-point policy, which focuses on early childhood education, K-12 education, supplemental educational opportunities and college affordability.
“Education is one of the issues I am most passionate about. It is the best lever we can pull on to close the income inequality gap,” Trahan said.
The Lowell-based candidate and mother of two young daughters pledged to support efforts that start in early childhood, including Head Start. Trahan also advocates for free, universal all-day kindergarten.
If elected to Congress, Democrat Trahan said she plans to also promote early access to vocational programs and trade opportunities.
“High quality public education is the key to unlocking our nation’s true economic potential, creating new opportunities, and ensuring the American Dream is still attainable for all,” she said. “Congress needs to make education a priority, from cradle to career.”
The fall primary election to determine candidates to succeed retiring Congresswoman Tsongas takes place Tuesday, Sept. 4. Other Democratic candidates on the ballot include Andover’s Sen. Barbara L’Italien and Dan Koh, along with Haverhill natives Rep. Juana Matias and Alexandra Chandler.
