The country’s largest teachers’ union, the National Education Association, has chosen their congressional candidate and it’s Sen. Barbara L’Italien.

Andover-based L’Italien picked up the endorsement from the state’s 111,000 members of the Massachusetts Teachers Association in her quest to succeed retiring Congresswoman Niki Tsongas to represent the 3rd District.

“Sen. L’Italien is a true friend of public education,” Massachusetts Teachers Association President Barbara Madeloni said in her endorsement. “She has also made her mark as an outspoken advocate for students with disabilities, and thousands of children are getting a better education because of her work. We need strong women like her to stand up for educators and students in Congress.”

The National Education Endorsement, comprised of more than three million members, is the biggest organization to throw their support behind a 3rd District candidate.

With less than 100 days to go until the Sept. 4 congressional primary, L’Italien has earned endorsements by groups including the Massachusetts Nurses Association and the Massachusetts Coalition of Police.
