Bill Cox, the chairman of Haverhill’s Democratic City Committee, has thrown his support behind Concord congressional candidate Rufus Gifford in his quest to succeed the 3rd District’s Niki Tsongas.

Cox is endorsing Gifford in his personal capacity.

“Rufus is exactly the type of positive and values-driven leader we need,” said Cox, who also serves as Haverhill’s city solicitor. “In a toxic political climate, his campaign is a breath of fresh air. I believe Haverhill and the 3rd District will be better off under his leadership.”

Cox said Gifford’s prior background as the U.S. ambassador to Denmark and as a 10-year senior aide to Barack Obama would make him an asset to the district.

“He is by far the most experienced candidate who can get the most done for the 3rd District,” said Cox.

Heading into the Sept. 4 congressional primary, Gifford faces Democratic opposition from Sen. Barbara L’Italien and Andover-based freshman candidate Dan Koh, among others.
