This summer, the MBTA is helping riders save some green. Starting next month and running through Sept. 2, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is offering $10 summer weekend fares for all commuter rail lines and zones.
As part of the pilot program, riders are able to take advantage of the lower fares from the first scheduled Saturday trip through the last scheduled Sunday trip.
“We look forward to testing this pilot program as we work to determine if there is an untapped market for weekend commuter rail service,” MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramirez said. “There is plenty of capacity on our weekend trains, and we’d be happy to fill those seats with families and others traveling in and out of Boston this summer.”
The program is designed to offer pricing that competes with the cost of driving and parking in Boston, MBTA officials said.
Tickets may be purchased at the reduced rate on the MBTA mTicket app, onboard trains and at ticket windows at North, South and Back Bay Stations. The fare applies to riders age 12 and over. Paying adults may bring two children under 12 for free.
