Students from Methuen’s Adult Learning Center trekked to Beacon Hill Wednesday to meet with Merrimack Valley legislators, celebrating the state delegation’s work to secure additional financing for older learners.

During their meet and greet with Reps. Linda Dean Campbell, Diana DiZoglio and Frank Moran, the group learned about the legislative process and received a tour of the Statehouse.

Campbell is grateful for the services the Learning Center provides to local students.

“The students who attend the Methuen Adult Learning Center are doing all they can to prepare themselves for gainful employment and to contribute to their communities,” said Campbell. “The programs have proven to be successful and these students are shining lights in our community and are truly worthy of my support in the budget.”

Serving more than 150 students annually, the Methuen educational resource focuses on providing basic literacy skills, math and civics lessons for residents preparing to take GED exams. Course offerings are free and fully funded by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen.

Looking ahead to the 2019 fiscal year, the state’s Senate Ways and Means Committee proposed a $4.91 billion budget for local education, up slightly from the $4.87 billion approved by the House. Budget debate on the Senate floor is expected to begin next week.
