Elizabeth ‘Bette’ Zazopoulos, 96, Worked at Haverhill’s Family-Owned Radio Market

Elizabeth “Bette” Zazopoulos passed away surrounded by family at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill. She was 96.

Zazopoulos was born in Haverhill in 1922 to Chris and Cleona Zazopoulos, and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1940. Upon graduating from Vesper George School of Arts in Boston, she opened a dress shop in her home.

Several years later she began working at Radio Market, the Greek-oriented corner grocery store on Locke Street in Haverhill that her father began in 1916. She contributed to the growth of the business until her retirement in 1984.

During the summer months Zazopoulos enjoyed tending to her flower, tomato, and herb garden. And like her mother, she was a good cook, and shared family recipes, and cooking tips with the next generation.

She was a very energetic, and social person, and made lifelong friends. She enjoyed family gatherings, as well as regular lunch dates with her many friends – she will be fondly remembered.

Zazopoulos leaves behind her nephew Chris Scliris, his wife Elizabeth, and her nephew Alex, and a number of close cousins. A special thank you to her cousin Cindy Mendonsa who helped her over the past few years. She was predeceased by her sister Electra “Peewee” Scliris who died six days ago, her brother-in-law Navy Cmdr. Louis Scliris in 2016, and her nephew George Scliris in 1993.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Wednesday, May 9 from 10-11 a.m. at the Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter St. Haverhill, immediately followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church, 154 Winter St., Haverhill, MA 01830.
