Anthony C. Penta, 65, Former Haverhill High Teacher

Anthony C. Penta, 65, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, May 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Haverhill, Penta was the son of the late Charles and Antoinette (Berardini) Penta. He graduated from Haverhill High School, Class of 1970 and Cornell University, Class of 1974. A well respected and admired educator, Penta began his career at Haverhill High School before joining the faculty at Pinkerton Academy, where he taught Mathematics for more than 30 years. Penta also served as a professor of mathematics at UMass Lowell, and was coach of the Pinkerton Academy math team and longtime broadcaster for the varsity football team.

In addition to his brilliant mind, Penta shared a great sense of humor and keen wit. He closely followed horse racing and enjoyed summers at the track. He was talented in the game of chess and held a great passion for music. Above all, he was a devoted friend who will be missed by all knew and loved him.

He is survived by numerous cousins, notably Kathy and Ernie Fuller, Ronald LaBatte, Dennis and Lisa LaBatte, Alan and Kim LaBatte, his goddaughter Angela DiPietro and dear friends Saul Shriber, Rose Karjala, James and Christine Peck, Stephanie Flynn, Robert and Roberta Hirsh, Dr. John and Ellen Zimmerman.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, May 9 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. at All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Avenue, Haverhill. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, North Broadway, Haverhill.
