UPDATE: Authorities ID Haverhill Man, 60, Killed by Falling Tree

UPDATE: The Essex County District Attorney’s Office has identified the victim of the fatal accident as 60-year-old Michael Sughrue.

Emergency vehicles were called to 159 Hoyt Rd. in Haverhill Sunday at approximately 5 p.m. after receiving reports that a man was pinned under a tree and unconscious.

“The man and his adult son were working in his backyard clearing tree branches that had fallen throughout the winter.  One large tree had snapped in half and was leaning against another nearby tree.  As the man was trying to cut down the snapped tree, the supporting tree gave out and the snapped tree fell on top of him,” according to a statement from Carrie Kimball Monahan, Director of Communications for the Essex District Attorney’s Office.

Haverhill Fire Dept. had to cut the tree so it could be removed and the 60-year-old was taken to Holy Family Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
