Groveland Police’s Heather Riley sure has heart. Riley, a detective sergeant, was honored by Merrimack Valley Credit Union last week when she was named as the first responder winner of the credit union’s “Biggest Heart Awards.”

Riley was honored for her dedication to the local community and her selflessness in the wake of personal tragedy. After a lifelong friend lost her battle with cancer, Riley made the decision to take in her friend’s teenage son, who was left without family after his mother’s death.

Members of the Groveland Police Department say Riley’s honor is well deserved.

“The public expects our first responders to be selfless and dedicated to the community while they are at work,” dispatcher Catelyn Trudell said when nominating her coworker. “Heather is an example of someone who lives her entire life by that standard.”

An 11-year member of the Groveland Police Department, Riley became the first female supervisor in department history after a promotion last summer.

In recognition of her efforts, the Merrimack Valley Credit Union made a $500 donation to cervical cancer nonprofit Cervivor on her behalf in memory of her late friend.
