In campaign news, Andover’s Dan Koh received the endorsement of Local 1705 of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in his bid for the 3rd Congressional seat.
Local 1705 represents over 230 employees in Lowell and is the 11th union to endorse Koh so far.
“There are a number of great candidates in this race, but we believe there are more than a few key things that set Dan apart from the rest of the pack,” said Local 1705 President Corey Robinson.
The Marlborough City Council also endorsed Koh, saying “I am supporting Dan because he will be a strong advocate for working families in Marlborough and across the 3rd District.
In Congress, Dan will work to create economic growth, improve our healthcare system and protect our environment.”
Barbara L’Italien received an endorsement from Senate President, Harriette Chandler for the same seat.
Chandler said, “over her distinguished career in public service, Barbara has been a consistent champion for children, families, and the most vulnerable. She’s been a progressive leader at the forefront of the most important fights of the past 15 years, and a trusted advocate for her district.”
Four IBEW Local Unions have also endorsed L’Italien with a statement that together, the four unions represent approximately 5,000 members.
Local 1505 Vice President, David Middlemiss said, “what makes Barbara stand out as the best choice for 1505 workers and our families is her experience. Barbara has been fighting for us for over a decade and that experience supporting worker sis what will make her an outstanding Congresswoman and the right choice for the labor community.”
Currently, there are more than a dozen Democratic Candidates vying for the 3rd Congressional District seat to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas., and one Republican.
UMass Lowell and the university’s Center for Public Opinion will host two 90-minute debates Sunday, April 29 for Democratic primary candidates.
“The free and open exchange of ideas is central to our democracy and to the core values of UMass Lowell,” said UMass Lowell Chancellor Jacquie Moloney, “we believe these forums will assist voters across the 3rd Congressional District as they consider candidates in the primary and general elections later this year. It will also engage our students in the electoral process and strengthen their understanding of American democracy.”
