A 41-year-old North Andover tow truck driver was struck and killed Wednesday night after he came to the aid of motorists involved in a two-car crash on Interstate 495 in Andover.

State Police said Daniel Coady was standing to the left of his truck in the breakdown lane, loading one of the cars involved in the initial crash onto his flatbed, when he was hit by a passing Pontiac G6 traveling southbound.

When the Pontiac, driven by a 28-year-old Lawrence woman, became disabled after the collision, it was subsequently struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe driving past the crash scene.

The Pontiac’s driver was taken to Lowell General Hospital with serious injuries. A second tow truck driver assisting his colleague on the flatbed was also injured and taken to Lowell General.

The driver of Hyundai, a 26-year-old Lawrence woman, was uninjured.

The accident remains under investigation.
