Elpiniki (Ziaras) Karoutas, 85, Former Student Monitor at St. James School

Elpiniki (Ziaras) Karoutas, 85, of Haverhill, died Friday, March 2, at Winchester Hospital in Winchester.

She was born in Pentalofos, Greece, on Sept. 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Haralampos and Martha (Vouyas) Ziaras, and was educated there.

She and her husband, the late Evangelos Karoutas, came to the United States in 1954 and resided in Haverhill ever since.

A longtime member of Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church and its Women’s Philoptochos Society, Karoutas volunteered at numerous Church functions.

She also worked for several years as a student monitor at St. James Elementary School in Haverhill.

She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking and cherished yearly vacations with her family at Martha’s Vineyard. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sorely missed.

Her survivors include two daughters, Despina Samiotes and her husband Charles of Wayland, Martha Karoutas of Tewksbury, a son, Zeses Karoutas and his wife Stephanie of Lexington, S.C., five grandchildren, Melissa Karoutas and fiance Niki Asikis, James Karoutas and his wife Lauren, George Samiotes and his fiancee Viviana Corbett, Anna Bhattacharya and her husband Rajiv, and Nikki Wouralis, three great-grandchildren, Adaeline and Evangeline Karoutas and Max Bhattacharya as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her visitation on Thursday, March 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. in Holy Apostles Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 154-156 Winter St., Haverhill, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at the Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. Arrangements are by the H.L.
