Activist and politician Minou Tavárez Mirabal has been tapped as the speaker for Northern Essex Community College’s latest White Fund Enlightenment Series lecture, held on Friday, March 9 in Lawrence.
Titled “Uniting the Women of Today for a Better Tomorrow,” the lecture will be in Spanish, with English translation available.
Mirabal is the daughter of the late Dominican Republic political activist Minerva Mirabal Tavarez, who founded the 1960 movement to overthrow Dominican dictator Rafael “El Chivo” Trujillo. The family’s story was popularized in the award-winning 1994 Julia Alvarez novel “In the Time of Butterflies.”
She is expected to discuss female empowerment and violence against women during the speech, which will be held at the Lawrence Public Library, 51 Lawrence St.
