Haverhill Police are searching for a man who scammed the Westgate Market Basket out of a $200 gift card over the weekend.
Patrolman Kevin Portnoy responded to the supermarket at 400 Lowell Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. Sunday and was notified by a manager that a man walked out of the store with a $200 gift card he activated but didn’t pay for.
According to a police report, the suspect placed several small items on the register belt and asked for $200 to be added to a gift card. Once the card was activated, the suspect claimed he left his wallet in the car, stuck the card in his pocket and left the store. He got into a white Cadillac that was waiting for him in the front of the store.
When questioned by police, the female driver of the Cadillac said the suspect was a “friend of a friend” she was driving as a favor. The woman said she was unaware that the man she knew only as “Cheo” had shoplifted the gift card.
The suspect is described as a white male aged 25-40 and was captured on surveillance video wearing a hooded sweatshirt and work boots.
