Nicholas M. Debitetto, 82, Worked at Barrett’s Men Shop, Other Local Businesses

Nicholas M. Debitetto, 82, of Haverhill, husband of Eileen T. (Ribas) Debitetto, passed away Jan. 28,at home with his family by his side.

Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late Angelo and Catherine (Adzarito) Debitetto. Raised and educated in Haverhill, he attended the Tilton School and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1953. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Salem in the Mediterranean Sea and also at Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Rhode Island and was honorably discharged. He was employed at various businesses in the Haverhill area, Haverhill Gazette as a truck driver, Barrett’s Men Shop, Shoe Heel factory after his release from the Navy, Haverhill Gazette in ad sales, life guard at Salisbury Beach in 1954 and 1957, salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company from 1958 until 1961. In 1961, he began a career with Massachusetts Department of Revenue and achieved bureau chief status until his retirement in 1987. He continued to work as a bookkeeper and tax preparer. He enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, especially visiting with his father’s family in Giovinazzo, Bari, Italy. Debitetto and his wife also spent thirty winters at Delray Beach in Florida. He traveled the United States extensively as well.

In addition to his wife, Debitetto is survived by his children, Joanne Wilde of Haverhill, Mark N. Debitetto and his wife Nancy of Groveland, James R. Debitetto and his wife Nichada of Haverhill and John J. Debitetto and his wife Pamela of Amesbury; five grandchildren, Rachael Wilde, Amanda Debitetto, Matthew Debitetto, Michael Debitetto and Christina Debitetto; and his sister Virgina Moustafa.

Funeral services are private. Arrangements are by Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. A memorial service and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations in Debitetto’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
