The state Department of Transportation has awarded Haverhill $500,000 to repair and upgrade deteriorated city bridges, Mayor James J. Fiorentini announced.

The funds come as a reimbursement for the 2017 East Broadway Bridge replacement project.

“We are very thankful to the Baker-Polito Administration for this new funding, which will allow us to make other important bridge and transportation improvements in the city without having to rely solely on local taxpayer funds,” Fiorentini said.

Haverhill is one of 12 communities to receive such funding from the Baker-Polito Administration. The city was selected based on fiscal need and impact on emergency and other service providers, among other factors.

The original East Broadway Bridge, built in 1932, was closed and traffic detoured for several months in 2017. The new bridge opened this past summer.
