Haverhill is one of more than 250 fire departments across the Commonwealth to receive state funding for fire education programs, the Baker-Polito Administration and state Department of Fire Services announced.

Methuen and Andover’s fire departments will also benefit from grant money.

Local funds will go to Student Awareness of Fire Education training, with departments working alongside classroom teachers to deliver fire safety tips and life-saving strategies. A similar program designed for seniors will also be enhanced across the Merrimack Valley.

“The programs are having a great impact on the fire and life safety of our most vulnerable populations – children and elders,” State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey said. “The fire departments being supported in these public education efforts are increasing the safety of the people in their communities.”

Since the program began more than 20 years ago, Massachusetts has seen a seventy-two percent decrease in the number of children dying in fires, Gov. Charlie Baker said.
