Crystal Lake Golf Course Sold at Auction, New Owner Anticipates April Re-Opening

Crystal Lake golf course may have officially changed hands, but those 18 holes in Haverhill aren’t going anywhere. The 137-acre North Broadway course was officially sold at auction Thursday to Sterling Golf and its owner Kevin Osgood.

Osgood, who operates eight Massachusetts courses and one in New Hampshire, takes over ownership from Michael Maroney.

Osgood was one of two bidders for the course. He purchased the property and all associated equipment for $960,000.

Newton, Mass.-based Sterling Golf intends to re-launch Crystal Lake in April, Osgood said.

“We’ve now purchased the golf course and have to do the due diligence of closing,” he told WHAV. “It’ll take us about 45 days to get keys and open the building. By then we’ll have everything organized to hold a meeting in the club house to introduce ourselves and our plans for the year.”

Previous owner Maroney filed suit against the city of Haverhill relating to the development of a subdivision on the grounds. In 2016, he accused Mayor James J. Fiorentini and Public Works Director Robert Ward of withholding building permits, causing prospective homebuyers to demand their money back.

Osgood has already extended an olive branch to the city and intends to hire back as many existing Crystal Lake staffers as possible.

“We’re there to run a golf course and that’s our goal. We’re not going to build any units,” he said. “I’ve talked to the town of Haverhill and had lengthy conversations to make sure we’re on the same page on what our direction was and I think we’ll be able to build a great relationship moving forward.”
