As temperatures drop to single digits across the Merrimack Valley, Haverhill’s Emmaus is the latest location to open its doors so neighbors can stay warm.
Ten residents took advantage of the emergency shelter at Mitch’s Place overnight Wednesday, Emmaus staff tells WHAV. Another city family found shelter through the North East Veterans Center.
“Extreme weather is something we prepare for in both the winter and the summer,” Emmaus Executive Director Jeanine Murphy said. “We thank the community support for their help during this weather emergency and we also thank our tremendous and caring staff who are working additional hours and coordinating this effort.”

Residents are also invited to stay warm at the Citizens Center. That shelter, at 10 Welcome St., is overseen by Director of Human Services Vinny Oullette and can be opened by contacting the Haverhill Police non-emergency number 978-373-1212.
