Haverhill’s mayor wants to keep his city out of the cold. One day after the Merrimack Valley was blanketed with a white Christmas, Mayor James J. Fiorentini is designating the Citizen’s Center as an emergency overnight shelter for neighbors seeking warmth.

In conjunction with Haverhill Police Chief Alan R. DeNaro, Fiorentini put the 10 Welcome St. building on standby Tuesday. The shelter is available as needed for at least the next week, Fiorentini said.

During daytime hours, residents in need of shelter are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to make arrangements. Those seeking warmth overnight should call the Haverhill Police Department’s non-emergency number at 978-373-1212 to initiate the opening of the shelter.
