An unidentified man is recovering from a gunshot wound after a drive-by attack late last night on Varnum Street.

Responding to reports, police arrived at 10:30 p.m. in the area of 10 Varnum St. and found a man in the street who had received a non-life-threatening bullet wound. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Varnum Street runs between River and Washington Streets.

Police would not release the victim’s age or residence, nature of the wound or other details while the shooting is under investigation. Detective Lt. Robert P. Pistone, however, did ask the public to assist police by providing any information. Anonymous tips may be left for investigators by calling 978-373-1212.

The shooting comes more than a month after a similar incident at a Hilldale Avenue shopping plaza and at least four more over the summer in the city’s Acre neighborhood. Police have previously blamed gang violence and retaliation for playing a role in the violence, but did not offer any speculation about motives behind Monday night’s crime.
