Brian J. Zaniboni has been named Haverhill’s new highway superintendent, Mayor James J. Fiorentini said Friday.

He previously served as the director of the Newton, Mass., Highway Department and has 25 years of private construction and development experience.

“We are fortunate to have an individual as skilled and experienced as Mr. Zaniboni in charge of one of the most important departments in our city,” Fiorentini said. “I am fully confident that Brian is going to be a great asset to myself as well as to the residents of Haverhill.”

Officially on the job since October, Zaniboni has been tasked with managing the city’s new “Complete Streets” program, a $70,000 initiative described as a “common sense” approach to road repairs and upgrades.

As part of the Complete Streets program, Zaniboni will pay special attention to sidewalks, lighting and landscaping along the corridors being worked on. He is also charged with maximizing the efficiency of the city’s winter plowing and road-treatment efforts.

Zaniboni reports to Department of Public Works Director Michael K. Stankovich.
