Methuen Warns Residents of Possible Scam Involving Fake Water Department Employee

The city of Methuen is warning residents of a possible scam involving a fake water department employee going door to door requesting entry for inspection purposes.

A resident from the Prospect Street area alerted police to suspicious activity from a woman claiming to work for the water department. On two separate occasions in the last week, the unidentified woman presented the homeowner a lanyard with an identification card and asked for the resident by name each time she visited.

The suspicious person is described as a Hispanic female approximately 30 years old with a “husky” build. She speaks fluent Spanish. At the time of the reported incidents, the woman wore jeans and had her dark hair in a ponytail. She has been spotted in both a dark sedan and a white SUV.

Methuen authorities confirm that the woman is not a city employee.

Police ask any residents who may have had a similar experience to call the department at 978-983-8698.
