The Methuen Police Department is asking for the public’s help in finding out who spray-painted swastikas in several locations Sunday.
Swastikas were painted on the sides of multiple vehicles and a property sign. Another vehicle was vandalized with a vulgar word. During a press conference Sunday, Methuen Police Lt. Michael Papparlardo said police are unsure of the motives behind the graffiti.
“It does not appear though that these people were specifically targeted. It appears to be a random act. There is no evidence to indicate that there was a particular reason or these people—the victims—were associated with any particular group,” he said.
Vehicles were vandalized on Temple Drive, Bridle Path and Deborah Avenue, while a sign was vandalized at the intersection of West Street and Varnai and a fence was damaged on Sevoian Drive.
However, Police Chief Joseph E. Solomon said, “No matter the intent, swastika imagery represents hatred and bigotry and there is no place for that in our community.”
