Holy Family Hospital has announced new prostate cancer testing options will be implemented at their Methuen and Haverhill campuses.
To more accurately diagnose the disease, Holy Family will take advantage of targeted mpMRI Fusion biopsies, which take images from a pre-exam MRI of the prostate and match them with real-time ultrasound images to create a 3-D color image to help target abnormal tissue.
As Holy Family urologic surgeon Dr. Liam Hurley explains, the advanced technology will cut down on false negative biopsy results. “The use of mpMRI fusion biopsy will diminish the amount of unnecessary biopsies, and at the same time, find more significant cancer earlier. Holy Family Hospital is at the forefront in starting this new program of advanced technology,” Hurley said in a statement. An estimated 25 percent of the 1.3 million biopsies conducted annually have a false negative, meaning that the patient had cancer, but it was not detected during the test.
Holy Family Hospital president Craig Jesiolowski is proud to advance the facility’s radiologic testing.
“This technology offers physicians and patients a highly accurate method for detection of prostate cancers, which in the past have been missed,” Jesiolowski said. “Earlier detection of prostate cancer, as with all cancers, is important because the earlier it is detected, the better the outcome for our patients.”
