The Haverhill Fire Department is having an open house this Thursday, aimed at teaching families fire safety and prevention practices.

Taking place Oct. 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and sponsored by Papa Gino’s, the open house takes place at Water Street Fire Station, 131 Water St.

“This event allows us to reach out to the community and arm local families with fire safety tips and procedures,” said Deputy Jeff Akstin. “Our open house allows families to get together and better prepares them to react if a fire does start,” he added.

Commemorating National Fire Safety Month, participants will receive safety tips such as “stop, drop and roll” and learn how to plan escape routes and crawl safely through a smoke-filled room.  Free pizza and children’s fire safety coloring sheets are available.

For the past 23 years, Papa Gino’s has sponsored open houses throughout New England, helping to educate more than two million people about fire prevention and safety. During the month of October, Papa Gino’s will also provide guests with fire prevention themed coloring sheets and a limited number of certificates for kids, while supplies lasts.
