The man accused of trying to burn the Hilldale Avenue, Haverhill, home of his girlfriend’s ex- boyfriend was sentenced this week to four to six years in prison.
Twenty-six-year-old Troy Maloney, of Lowell, was sentenced by Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Feeley. The judge followed the recommendation of District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett’s office. Defense lawyers had asked for no more than four years on the felony charge of arson of a dwelling.
Maloney pleaded guilty Sept. 26 to setting fire to the two-family home at 493 Hilldale Ave., early the morning of Saturday, March 18. Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished a small fire at the duplex.
Fire Chief William F. Laliberty previously told WHAV the damage was “minimal,” but an investigation focused on Maloney’s intent.
In April, Haverhill police traveled Binghamton, N.Y., where Maloney had fled, and returned him to Massachusetts, said Jennifer Mieth, public information officer for state Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey.
