The Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund this week endorsed City Councilor Andy Vargas’ bid for the Democratic nomination as state representative for the third Essex District.

The environmental group describes itself as a nonpartisan organization advocating for laws that protect the state’s environmental legacy, holds elected officials accountable and works to build the political power of the environmental community.

“Andy Vargas understands that we can have both a healthy environment and a strong economy,” stated ELM Action Fund Executive Director Joe O’Brien. “He knows that in cities and towns across the state we need to build a clean energy economy including wind turbines and solar arrays that will power us into the future.”

Vargas’ first term on the City Council, the group said, “has been marked by strong advocacy for economic development, education and financial transparency.”

Vargas is one of two Democrats facing off in Tuesday’s special primary to fill the seat of Rep. Brian S. Dempsey, who resigned this summer.

“We support Andy Vargas because he understands the importance of our state investing in clean energy, sustainable transportation and parks to help address climate change, create jobs, and build healthier communities,” said ELM Action Fund President Elizabeth Henry.

  1. Insiders in Haverhill politics say without hesitation that Brian Dempsey dislikes Andy Vargas immensely. During his campaign for city councilor Andy lied, AGAIN, when he claimed he interned for Brian…which he didn’t. Brian is an experienced enough politician who knows that acknowledging Andy’s lie makes the whole Democrat party look bad, so he said nothing publicly. Privately is an entirely different matter.

Should Andy win on Tuesday it will be interesting to see if Dempsey will even support him during the general election. Brian is a party loyalist, but Andy’s sleazy, immature move of lying about working in Brian’s office may just be enough to let the kid go it alone.

Where is Linda Dean-Campbell’s endorsement? Why is she hiding?

    • Why are you hiding?

And if Dempsey didn’t like Andy, he would have made sure that the new Ways and Means Chair didn’t endorse him. But he did. And so did 8 other legislators.

Dempsey is a pragmatist and a humble guy. Mags is a nice guy 1on1, but he’s an opportunist and a little too arrogant for my liking.

Those who’ve met Andy know he’s humble and works hard, just like Brian did.

The icing on the cake for me was that Andy will be a full-time Rep.

      • Smith….Since you seem to be an Andy supporter…..

Can you ask Acorn Andy why his his parents didn’t fill out the 2010 US Census? Ask him why after breaking the laws of this country by entering it illegally Andy’s father should be allowed to stay here.

Ask Andy why he immediately took his Facebook comment down warning criminal trespassers Federal Gov’t law enforcement officials were in the city trying to get drug dealers off the streets of after it was found out he had posted it.

Ask Andy why he refuses to answer the questions of Eagle Tribune and Valley Patriot reporters of whether he supports making Haverhill a sanctuary city.

  2. I do not think that this endorsement is anything more than one friend endorsing another. The reasons given for endorsing Andy are so superficial that they could apply to anyone, anywhere in the world. Clearly, there is a personal bias involved. What is missing is the reality that Andy does not support Haverhill’s environment to the extent that he wants it to become a sanctuary city. The safety of all Haverhill residents is an essential part of the environment and Andy is less concerned about that than he should be.

  3. Criminal trespassers in the country illegally is the NUMBER ONE issue facing Haverhill citizens. It has been reported that over 1,100 children of invaders attend city schools, which costs taxpayers $13.2MILLION EVERY year. Invaders bring the drugs to the city killing a generation of young people. They rape women in city parks. They shoot at city cops in them middle of the day. Crimes of all sorts are way up. They illegally get welfare benefits. They endanger motorists driving illegally. And on and on.
ANDY VARGAS SUPPORTS ALL OF THIS!!! Andy is an advocate of making Haverhill an official sanctuary city. Andy not only supports it as a matter of public policy, he went out of his way to interfere with Federal gov’t officials trying to get drugs off city streets.
What is it going to take voters to realize Andy is a serious threat to their safety? A child getting snatched off the street and raped all day by an illegal like what happened in Lawrence? A burglar breaking into an elderly couple’s home and murdering them? More rapes in city parks? Gangs shooting and killing a Little Leaguer? If people think these things can’t happen to them, they’re fooling themselves. It is all tied to illegals with a direct line to Andy’s support of them!!

Weird because no one from there has donated a penny.

A few bucks coming from out of state, and monies from Seth Moulton’s and Niki Tsongas folks, and the usual Democrats and some really far left locals like the economists who hosted Niki Tsongas’ special invites only PRIVATE Town Hall. Daniel Koh, ex-Marty Walsh hack, helped make Boston the #1 most income disparate city in the nation donated $1K. He’s running for 3rd District to replace Niki. David Torrisi of Torrisi Strategic Advisors is well known local, he’s the front man for Lupoli, Sal paid him over $100K to the lobbyist over the last few years to get what he wanted.
