Michael James Bucuzzo, 90, Owned Hannah’s Market

Michael James Bucuzzo, 90, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 24, at Lawrence General Hospital. He was the husband of nearly 65 years of Madeline N. (Cusano) Bucuzzo, who died April 16, 2014.

One of two sons of the late Rocco and Caroline (Miller) Bucuzzo, he was born in Haverhill, Dec. 28, 1926, and had attended Haverhill Trade School. He served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post in Haverhill for many years.

Bucuzzo was the owner of the former Hannah’s Market in the Riverside section of Haverhill. As a skilled butcher, he served up the freshest sliced cold cuts as well as any cut of meat that a customer desired. He worked at Northshore Vending as well as Western Electirc before and after owning Hannah’s Market and at Butcher Boy Market.

In his spare time, he loved creating one-of-a-kind stained glass pieces for his family and friends, who were always amazed at his workmanship and artistic flare. Playing cards was always a favorite, be it “poker,” “45s,” “Black Jack” or whatever, especially when winning. Bucuzzo always looked forward to trips to Fox Woods and Mohegan Sun, taking his chance with “Lady Luck” and loving every minute of the chance of winning big. After his retirement, he spent much of his time working the flea markets in the local communities. He was also a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in Haverhill’s Riverside section.

Predeceased by his wife, Madeline and his daughter, Mary A. Bucuzzo, he is survived by his son, Michael R. Bucuzzo of Lawrence; brother, John Bucuzzo and wife Betty of Haverhill; nephews, Michael Cortese and companion Carol Cass, Ralph Cusano and wife Francine of Haverhill, Scott Bucuzzo of Massachusetts and Mark Bucuzzo of Haverhill; niece, Carole Azzarito and husband Frank of Haverhill; along with extended family members and lifelong friends.

A period of visitation takes place Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Monument Square Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 334 Main St., Haverhill, immediately followed by services at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Haverhill High School Class of 1975 for the Mary A. Bucuzzo Scholarship Fund, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
