Covanta’s Haverhill-based facility is helping the Parent Teacher Organization of John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School start the new school year off right thanks to a generous donation.

On Tuesday, Covanta’s Mark Van Weelden presented Whittier PTO Treasurer Audra Woitkowski with an $800 check to support the group’s efforts.

“PTO organizations are critical in filling the ever-increasing fiscal gaps in our educational system. Without these hard working, volunteer-based organizations, our children would no longer have the valuable educational life experiences that PTO sponsored events provide,” Van Weelden told WHAV after making the donation.

Van Weelden currently serves as Covanta’s business manager for the Greater Boston, New Hampshire and Maine district. In June 2016, the company – which operates an energy-from-waste plant in Haverhill – was honored by the Environmental Business Council of New England for “quietly” becoming one of the largest recyclers in the state.
