College educated immigrants will have the opportunity to further their technology and job search skills thanks to a $10,000 grant from Eastern Bank’s Charitable Foundation.

Through the grant, announced earlier this week, NECC will launch a three-month program, “English for Skilled Immigrants,” aimed at immigrants who hold college degrees from their home countries but lack the language and literacy skills to move forward in their careers.

“Because of language, credential recognition, and other barriers, many highly skilled, college-educated immigrants cannot contribute their academic and professional training and skills,” NECC’s dean of development Wendy Shaffer said. “As a result, they work in low-skilled, low-paying jobs or are unemployed. Tapping underutilized skills will have a positive impact on local and regional economies,”

NECC’s new offering will consist of a mix of technology teachings and job search strategies. The proposed curriculum will blend 9.5 hours of face-to-face English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and technology classes with four to six hours of English practice online.

The program is expected to begin in spring 2018 and will be offered at the Riverwalk campus in Lawrence at 360 Merrimack St.

  1. You have to remember, Lane Glenn went to the Dominican Republic with Lawrence mayor Daniel Rivera to establish a program with community colleges there to facilitate illegal trespassers from that country attending NECC to transfer credits and obtain their degree from NECC. He then welcomed administrators from the DR colleges who came here and publicly stated their goal was to place as many people from their country in good jobs here in the US.

To see Glenn now go to the private sector to solicit funding from like minded liberals running corporations is just a natural extension of the program he already established. Knowing what we now know about the total incompetence of the Obama administration relating to its treatment of Veterans from healthcare services to job placement after completion of military service, this makes seeing a private company embracing insane liberal policies even that much more disgusting. Supporting criminal illegals in any way is as Anit-American as it gets.

    Ban Eastern Bank !!!

  2. “aimed at immigrants who hold college degrees from their home countries but lack the language and literacy skills to move forward in their careers.” –

Whose problem is that again? If I had an account with Eastern Bank, it would be closed tomorrow.

  3. Are these American Citizens we are talking about? Or has Eastern Bank donated to NECC with the intended target being illegals. Is there more to the story here that we are not being told?

Where is the assistance for our own young people who are looking for jobs? You know, the people who grew up in the area and whose parents contribute to the Bank and who pay taxes to the cities, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the federal government.
