Denis J. Gobeil, 86, Painter at Phillips Andover Academy

Denis J. Gobeil, 86, of Haverhill, died Sept. 7, at High Pointe Hospice House, surrounded by his family.
Born in Montreal, P.Q. Canada, son of the late Napoleon and Albertine (Cadieux) Gobeil, he attended St. Arsene High School and worked as a steeplejack as a young man.

Gobeil immigrated to the United States 55 years ago and settled in Haverhill where he has lived most of his life. He was employed as a painter at Phillips Andover Academy until his retirement and also painted and hung wallpaper in many local homes and businesses.

A member of All Saints Parish of Haverhill and the former Saint Joseph Parish, he was an avid Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox fan, and also enjoyed gardening and reading the Bible.

He leaves his wife of 32 years, Rita (Belanger) (Bartlett) Gobeil; step son and his wife, Alan and Joyce Bartlett of Lancaster, Penn.; step daughter, Priscilla Robinson, of Amesbury; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Madaline Gobeil of Montreal; several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; dear friend and neighbor Joyce Abbott; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, S. Lorraine (Belanger) Gobeil in 1984.

Relatives and friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. His funeral is Wednesday, 9 a.m., from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in All Saints Church, 120 Bellevue Ave., Haverhill. Burial follows in Saint Joseph Cemetery.
