Haverhill Man Receives Serious Injuries in 495, Multi-Car Accident

A 27-year-old Haverhill man was seriously injured this morning in a multi-car accident on Interstate 495 in Lawrence.

The yet-unidentified Haverhill man was driving a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse around 7:30 a.m., just south of Exit 42 in Lawrence. He was traveling south, State Police said, drove from the right lane to the far left lane, lost control, crossed the center median and was struck by a 2013 Ford Transit van, driven by a 31-year-old Lancaster man, that was traveling northbound, according to Trooper Sean Milovanovic. He was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Besides the Lancaster man, a 24-year-old Haverhill woman and a 25-year-old Methuen man were also injured when the woman slowed her 2013 Chevrolet Equinox to avoid hitting the Mitsubishi and was struck from behind by a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by the Methuen man. State Police said they were taken by ambulance to Lawrence General with non-life-threatening injuries.

All lanes were closed for the medical helicopter to land. Southbound lanes reopened at 8:30 a.m., while northbound lanes reopened at 10:10 a.m.

The crash is under investigation by troopers from the Andover Barracks. Assisting at the scene were Troop A Headquarters, State Police Crime Scene Services Section, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Community Action Team, Andover Police and Fire Departments, Lawrence Fire Department and Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
