The man who succeeded Rep. Brian S. Dempsey as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee today endorsed City Councilor Andy Vargas in the latter’s bid for the Democratic nomination for Haverhill’s state representative.

Jeffrey Sánchez has served in the House since 2003 and represents the Boston neighborhoods of Mission Hill, Jamaica Plain and Roslindale and Precinct 5 of Brookline. The special primary election takes place Tuesday, Oct. 10.

“We all owe Rep. Dempsey a debt of gratitude for his decades of service to the Commonwealth. The Third Essex District will have a more than capable successor in Andy Vargas,” Sánchez said.

“In his service on the Haverhill City Council, Andy has been steadfast in his commitment to all of Haverhill. Furthermore, he has shown an impressive depth of knowledge on critical policy at the local and state level. These qualities are critical for any representative to serve the people of their district on Beacon Hill,” the chairman added.

Vargas said he is “truly humbled and honored” by Sánchez’ endorsement. “For nearly 15 years, he has served the people of his district with integrity and hard work. He has advanced major pieces of healthcare, education, and housing legislation. I hope to be as effective on Beacon Hill. I look forward to potentially working alongside Chairman Sanchez and advancing our shared commitment to keep Massachusetts moving forward.”

  1. Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien, William Macek, Michael McGonagle and Melinda Barrett, all minor politicians, have endorsed Andy Vargas. They have all lost my vote’

  2. ” Furthermore, he has shown an impressive depth of knowledge on critical policy at the local and state level.” Really ? Obviously, Vargas has no idea what Federal law is. He flaunts the law and puts the lives of first responders at risk by helping illegals immigrants elude the law. Vargas supports the black lives matter movement too. So how is supporting a violent organization that calls for the death of cops a good thing that should be supported ? People can support the guy if they like but beware of Trojan horse.

    • YOU KNOW WHO PUT LIVES AT RISK, JACK?

ICE DID, WHEN THEY FAILED TO NOTIFY HAVERHILL POLICE OF THEIR ACTIVITY IN THE CITY, BREAKING PROCEDURE AND LEAVING THE DOOR OPEN FOR BLUE ON BLUE FIRE.

GET OFF VARGAS’ BACK OR MEET HIM FOR YOURSELF.

      • ICE put nobody “at risk” unless they were breaking the law. Get out of your school sandbox mentality and understand that laws are in place for a reason – you don’t pick and choose what laws to follow around here – this isn’t Venezuela (yet).

There’s no reason to “meet” someone you disagree with on fundamental issues of safety that face our community – it’s fine to research their public statements and actions, and disagree and criticize them openly in a public forum – like the one provided here.

Andy is wrong about immigration – period. He’s dead wrong. He also is under-qualified to be a state representative and should not be supported by anyone who respects and follows federal law.

      • The notification is strictly a courtesy, many agencies don’t do it because you can’t trust who you tell in that community.

Another result of unintended consequences when giving residency preference on civil service exams. The “invested in the community” is bullshit in regard to defense of the policy, especially in a city as inbred and crony as Haverhill is.

      • A month before the election Mayor Failurentini made national for Haverhill by ordering a property owner in the city to remove presidential campaign signs for the candidate he did not support. He intentionally violated that citizens rights to free speech in the process. This treasonous mayor has gone out of his way to support criminal illegal trespassers in the city.

And YOU want the Federal Government officials to trust this hack mayor by notifying him in advance of work that they are doing?

After Acorn Andy warned the invaders on his Facebook page that ICE was in the city Failurentini praised him for “supporting his constituency”. When it comes to Vargas and the mayor there is absolutely no difference where they stand on the issue of criminal invaders.

  3. Given that Andy Vargas himself announced a few months back that his parents came to this country illegally, how do voters know if Andy is a legal citizen of this country?

His unconditional support of criminal illegal trespassers in Haverhill would suggest he has a vested self-interest in opposing President Trump’s policies regarding DACA. Why else would an elected public official knowingly interfere with Federal Government immigration officials doing their job in Haverhill?

WHAV: Is there any way that you can research the citizenship status of Andy Vargas?
