Brian S. Dempsey has begun his new job as senior vice president and chief operating officer at ML Strategies, Boston.

The now-former state representative oversees the lobbying firm’s Boston and Washington operations, working government relations teams in both offices, according to a company statement this morning.

“From his home base in our Boston office, he draws on more than 25 years of experience in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to help clients achieve their legislative, regulatory and business goals,” the statement read.

Dempsey announced his surprise resignation as Third Essex state representative July 13. He was first elected to represent the city of Haverhill at the State House in 1991. As chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which drafts the state budget, he has been credited with bringing tens of millions of dollars to Haverhill in state aid ranging from annual payments on the former Hale Hospital debt and MassWorks grants to help create Harbor Place and revitalize downtown Haverhill.

He has also served as House chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Service, chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology, chairman of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy and chairman of the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies.

As chairman of the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, he co-authored An Act Relative to Economic Development Reorganization and An Act Establishing Expanded Gaming in the Commonwealth. While chairman of the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy, he co-authored the Green Communities Act. He was also co-author of the 2003 Economic Development Reorganization Act, the $100 million economic stimulus package that helped strengthen the state’s economy.

Dempsey also works as an insurance broker, and has owned and operated the Brian S. Dempsey Insurance Agency for more than 20 years. He holds a bachelor’s from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

  1. Joining the other MA Probation “unindicted co-conspirator” former State Senator Stephen Baddour of Methuen. Not bad for an agency that paid almost $1,8 million in lobbyist salary here in MA for 2016, and a client list paying just over $4 million for services just in MA. Some of those clients of course do NOT have your interests in mind, like Accenture LLP, an H-1B outsource outfit for non-American cheap labor. Or Johnson & Johnson, who lobbied to keep their price of drugs and people addicted to their drugs of choice. Throw in nearly $200K in political campaign contributions just to Beacon Hill, and another $1.7 million in federal lobbying for once again, not to the benefit of our interests but their own corporate cronies, Brian will fit in just fine.
