Local Workers to Show the ‘Labor’ in Labor Day at Area Events

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is expected to address the New Hampshire AFL-CIO during its Labor Day Breakfast in Manchester, N.H.

Local workers are showing the “labor” in Labor Day with actions in Lawrence and Manchester, N.H., Monday.

Members of Service Employees International Union 888, representing some workers at Haverhill Public Schools, UMass Lowell and other institutions, will join a “day of action” at an information tent on Campagnone Common at noon, during the Bread & Roses Heritage Festival. Organizers said they are standing up with fast food workers and other working people in raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

“Our members are joining forces with other working people and the Fight for $15 movement for a massive voter engagement drive ahead of the 2018 election,” said Mark DelloRusso, president of SEIU Local 888. “We need to push our elected leaders to listen to working families, raise wages, and expand the right to form unions,” he added.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and Congresswoman Anne McLane Kuster will join the New Hampshire AFL-CIO during its 2017 New Hampshire AFL-CIO Labor Day Breakfast, themed “Freedom to Join Together.” The event begins at 9 a.m. with Sanders speaking at 10:30, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 650 Hanover St., Manchester, N.H.

  1. Wonder if MA State Senator Dan Wolf is going to show. You know, they owner of Cape Air who supports “Fight for $15” but doesn’t pay his own employees that? Pretty sure Mr. DelloRusso makes over $15/hr considering Local 888 DOL filings show he was paid $101,472 salary.
